Superman/Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam (2010)

If you've been following this blog for any length of time then you know that I have a soft spot for animated comic book movies. They make me feel like a little boy again with their action-packed goodness and that makes me happy.

First off I have to say this movie isn't as Netflix advertises. Yes, the main story is a team-up of Superman and Shazam! but it isn't a full feature length movie, it's only 24 minutes. This is actually a collection of four shorts, the Superman/Shazam! story as well as animated shorts from lesser known DC Comics characters  Spectre, Green Arrow and Jonah Hex.

As with all of the other recent DC Comics animated features, the animation and voice acting are all top notch. I did think the Superman/Shazam! feature was a bit cheesy and childish. I really wouldn't be annoyed with that if this was made for kids. The problem is that the rest of the collection is really violent and the subject matter is definitely not OK for little kids. If this was a more consistent collection one way or another it would make a lot more sense but the way it is put together makes it seem like they threw together what they had lying around and packed it onto a disc.

I did enjoy the other three shorts much more than first. You could tell that the creators were willing to take more chances on them. Spectre had a very cool 70's vibe to it, the Green Arrow was an awesome little action short, and Jonah Hex was a cool little stylized western story. That being said, none of them were must-see's, but if you're really into this sort of stuff you'll want to check them out. If you're not a hardcore animated comic book movie fan then you should probably start with some of the other choices I've reviewed previously (click here to see them).

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010)

I love comic book movies, particularly animated ones. They make me nostalgic for the Saturday mornings of my childhood where I'd make sure I was up early to watch the Batman, Spider-Man and X-Men cartoons that I loved so much. They were so epic and awesome to me and I hold all other cartoons to the high standard they set for me. DC Comics has been making these pretty awesome feature length animated comic book movies lately and a guilty pleasure of mine is sitting down and watching them as soon as I can get my hands on them.

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse was a pretty awesome example of why I like these movies so much. It had humor, epic action and made me feel like a kid wishing I could shoot lasers out of my eyes. The animation in this one was really well done and you can tell that DC is getting better and better at making these movies and I hope it continues. The story for this one centers around Supergirl falling to earth and features Superman, Batman and everyone's favorite bondage queen Wonder Woman. It was great fun and I had a really good time. If you're anything like me and want to feel like a kid again, give this one a try.

Under The Red Hood (2010)

Alright, I'll admit it. I'm a total nerd when it comes to comic book cartoons. I used to watch Batman, the X-Men, and Spiderman (hell even The Tick) religiously every Saturday morning as a kid. There really is nothing as awesome as a good comic book cartoon. I never really got into comics themselves, but the cartoons, always made me drool. The last few years or so DC Comics has been putting out a ton of awesome animated features that take me back to those Saturday mornings of adolescence. They're all very well done and if you are in my age group and had similar experiences as a young boy (or girl), you'll appreciate this too.

I won't really go into the story because that'd ruin it. If you like Batman and like comic book cartoons just watch this. If you don't, then meh.
