Sam Kinison: Family Entertainment Hour (1991)

Featuring: Sam Kinison.

Warning: This will only be available to stream until April 15th so act fast!

We here at Netflix Stream (well, me) believe, nay, we know that Sam Kinison is one of the top five stand-up comedians of all time. At a time when comics like Jay Leno and Jerry Seinfeld were putting asses in seats with clean, observational humor a preacher named Sam Kinison burst onto the stand-up scene and completely blew the lid off of the mother and changed stand-up comedy forever. You say you like the anger of Lewis Black? The vulgarity of Lisa Lampenelli? The willingness to confront people with sexuality like a Russell Brand?

Well, they can all pretty much suck Sam Kinison's cocaine covered d***. Don't get me wrong, those are all funny comedians in their own right but they each ripped a single page out of Kinison's playbook while Kinison wrote the whole damn thing. In Family Entertainment Hour we get Sam as the f****** rock star he became later in his career (Netflix says this was released in 1987 but it was really released in 1991). When he enters accompanied by two young ladies on leashes wearing next to nothing you immediately realize that this isn't family entertainment at all. Sam riffs on topics like rap music, religion, sex, women, drugs and the legal issues he was having because of them. I will say that I think his earlier stuff was better but this was still damn funny and if you're a fan of stand-up comedy you definitely need to check this out right now.

This movie will stop streaming on Netflix 4/15/11.

Sam Kinison: Breaking the Rules (2000)

Since today would have been Sam Kinison's birthday I thought it was appropriate to review one of his insanely good HBO comedy specials. You know you're watching a great comic when something originally filmed 23 years ago still seems relevant and still cracks you the f*** up. I threw this on and was completely blown away by how funny, offensive and provocative Kinison was throughout. He really was an evil genius. No subject is too taboo for him to talk about (he actually explains that during this special) and no one can touch his style.

His stand up is so full of contrast. One minute he is calmly explaining something in a way that just about any rational person could agree with and the next he is combining the alphabet and cunnilingus. There wasn't anyone like him then, there isn't anyone that can touch him now and I doubt anyone could ever match the brilliance that is Sam Kinison. If there aren't any kids around and you don't mind having your Christian sensibilities assaulted then please, watch this special.

The Standard 5:

Why is it in your queue? Sam Kinison is funny as hell.

Is it artsy? No.

Best thing about the movie? Everything, I was either shocked or laughing the entire time.

What mood should I be in to watch this movie? Ready to be blown away.

What rating did you give it on Netflix? 5 Stars!

Back from Hell: A Tribute to Sam Kinison (2010)

Sam Kinison is one of the greatest, offensive, and most original comics to ever get on stage. The guy can talk about starving children in Ethiopia and make it hilarious. This documentary (click here to add to your queue) about his life and act was wonderful if you're a big Sam Kinison fan or someone just being introduced to his work. A bunch of other comedians talk about his legacy and fondly remember drug-filled stories about his antics back stage. It was all very funny.

Kinison used to be a preacher and it really shows. His thoughts on religion are very insightful and you can tell he definitely got his charisma and aura from the pulpit. I highly recommend this special whether you're a fan already or curious about that short fat comedian that's always yelling. Check it out, but be warned the language isn't exactly pretty.

The Standard 5:

Why is it in your queue? Sam Kinison is one of the funniest people to walk this earth.

Is it artsy? No.

Best thing about the movie? Besides Kinison's awesome yell? Everything.

What mood should I be in to watch this movie? Ready to laugh.

What rating did you give it on Netflix? 4 stars.
