Russel Brand in New York City (2009)

I'd heard a bit about Russel Brand before. Heard he was supposed to be a funny comic, that he was banging Katy Perry and all that. But, I never really felt motivated to check out his stand-up until I saw Get Him to the Greek a couple weeks ago and was blown away at how funny he was in that movie. I have to say I enjoyed his stand-up special (click here to add to your queue) but I had a bit higher hopes. It started off a little too egotistical for my tastes but his talent started to shine through towards the end. If I had to compare him to anyone I'd say he was a better looking, not as funny, not as original and quieter version of the great Sam Kinison. He borrow heavily from the Sam Kinison playbook in the way that he likes to push sexual mores, the way he likes to talk about controversial stuff, and even the way he walks around the stage. It was good and he had some really funny parts but in reality I just wanted to watch some Kinison (which I did right after). I say give it a look, we need more comics that try to push the envelope of what is in good taste. It makes for an entertaining show.

Also, if anyone knows what his best special is please let me know because I get the feeling this wasn't his best work.

The Standard 5:

Why is it in your queue? I thought he was great in Get Him to the Greek.

Is it artsy? Nope, it's good stand-up.

Best thing about the movie? When the lights go out, you'll know what I mean if you watch it.

What mood should I be in to watch this movie? Wanting to laugh.

What rating did you give it on Netflix? 3 stars.

  1. Did you see Forgetting Sarah Marshall? He played the same character in that film as he plays in Get Him to the Greek. It's pretty funny!
